How a Valued Support Worker Became a Photographer for Blackwood

At Blackwood Homes and Care, we believe in recognising the whole person, not just the job they do; but the skills, experiences, and passions they bring to the table. That’s why our Organisational Development Manager, Fiona, recently set out to map the hidden talents of our workforce.

The response was overwhelming. From degrees and master’s qualifications in unexpected fields to creative hobbies and entrepreneurial side projects, it became clear that our colleagues are as diverse and multi-talented as the communities we serve.

One of the stories that stood out was that of Rayson, a Support Worker at one of our Care at Home sites who recently moved into our 24/7 Technology Enabled Care (TEC) department. Alongside his role supporting customers to live their life to the full, Rayson is also a talented photographer looking to grow his portfolio.

After connecting with our Marketing Team, Rayson has started working with us on a number of photography and videography projects, helping to visually tell the stories that make Blackwood so unique. His first assignment? Capturing new headshots for our senior management team, a job he approached with professionalism and creativity, and the results spoke for themselves.

It’s been great to work on something I’m passionate about and feel supported by my employer to do that. I’ve always enjoyed photography, and having the chance to be part of campaigns and tell the stories of our staff and customers really means something to me, says Rayson.

He’ll now be collaborating with the Marketing Team to support key campaigns and projects , helping us document the moments that matter; from community events to customer stories and team milestones.

Fiona, who initiated the talent mapping project, says:

It’s important to us that people feel recognised not just for what they do day to day, but for who they are. This is about creating space for people to share more of themselves and contribute in different ways . Rayson’s story is a brilliant example of how we can grow and connect across departments when we take the time to look.

This is just the beginning. We’re excited to continue recognising the many skills and interests within our organisation,  and to create meaningful opportunities for colleagues to get involved in new ways, should they chose to.
