About Us

DR. Margaret Blackwood

Blackwood Homes and Care was founded in 1972 by Dr Margaret Blackwood MBE, a pioneering campaigner for the rights and independence of disabled people.

She was awarded an MBE for her tireless work to improve the lives of disabled people, particularly in raising awareness about the lack of accessible homes. Her vision focused on enabling independent living, through better financial support and housing that truly met people’s needs.

Today, we continue that vision by helping people live life to the full. We provide high-quality accessible housing, personalised care, and tailored support for people with a wide range of needs- with over 1,700 homes across 29 local authority areas in Scotland.

What makes us different is that we deliver both housing and care. While not everyone receives both services from us, our experience in each area strengthens the quality and flexibility of the support we offer.

We’re committed to innovation in how we support people to live independently. In housing, we have invested in the design of beautiful, accessible homes that combine modern construction with inclusive technology. In care, we offer a 24/7 digital support service and CleverCogs™; our award-winning personalised platform that helps people stay connected, manage their care, and live more independently both in their own homes and care settings.

Blackwood is registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) as a non-profit registered charity (number SC007658).
